This week on “Web Comic Spotlight” we will be taking a look at the web comic series False Positive written and drawn by Mike Walton. False Positive is an anthology horror/sci-fi/fantasy web comic series that features a wide range of subjects and draws a lot from classic horror and sci-fi writers such as H.P. Lovecraft and Steven King.

We featured a single page from the story Concoction of the first chapter from the first season of the series but we did think that alone truly did this series justice.

Whatcha’ Doing

Everything about this series is really well done. From the writing to the art style as well as the art direction are all masterfully done. The true strength of Mike Walton’s stories are both equal parts his art and his “show don’t tell” style of writing which greatly adds to the effects of False Positive’s more horror elements.

On My Honor

Each short story features its own unique character, theme, color palate and opening quote like the one preceding Newton’s Apple

“Nothing could go wrong because nothing had…I meant “nothing would.” No – Then I quit trying to phrase it, realizing that if time travel ever became widespread, English grammar was going to have to add a whole new set of tenses to describe reflexive situations – conjugations that would make the French literary tenses and the Latin historical tenses look simple.”

– Robert A. Heinlein

Reading one story that incorporates certain Sci-Fi elements such as “hard science” found in Newton’s Apple to then read a story that focuses more on magical and mythical elements like those found in Detained

In many ways False Positive is a lot like The Twilight Zone which is, considered by some, one of the best anthology series around. This web comic series does exactly what made shows like The Twilight Zone such a phenomenon in the first place. False Positive combines all of the best elements found in the genres and writers that inspired it in the first place while at the same time telling fun, creepy and engaging stories.

The best thing? Everything I talked about was only from the first season of which there are 3 seasons. All the stories have been drawn and written by Mike Walton with the exception of Chapter 11: Constriction which was drawn by Daniel Grovar.
